XiamenAir Sept 15–21 at $755/person is real (19h45, one 3h20 stop in Xiamen). But it's a 6-day trip fare. Stretch the same Xiamen routing to 14 days and it becomes $1,090/person — worse than Korean Air — and turns into a "separate tickets" self-transfer with no missed-connection protection.

Meanwhile, chasing your 10–12 day target turned up something better: Sept 10–21, 12 days, $2,014 for two — $99 cheaper than the 16-day plan, at the verified market floor, with clean flights both ways. It's option 1 below.

The trap: Sept 26–27 returns advertise lower prices, but every cheap option routes through a 17-hour overnight layover in Seoul — a 31-hour journey home. A good Sept 26 return costs $2,837. The savings are fake.

Market floor check: the cheapest fare on this route for September dates in any structure — round trip, open-jaw, either city — is $2,021 for two. The $2,014 option is at that floor.

Why Ha Giang isn't an option here

Your licence doesn't work there. Vietnam recognises only the 1968 Vienna Convention; Canada is a 1949 Geneva signatory, so a CAA International Driving Permit has no legal standing — there's no version where you ride legally, which means uninsured. Medevac to Hanoi runs €4,000–8,000, repatriation €30,000–80,000, and as driver in an accident you can face criminal charges and an exit ban.

Two consecutive Septembers of closures. 2024: Typhoon Yagi, then a Sept 30 landslide at Km156 of NH4C closed Ma Pi Leng and stranded tourists. 2025: three storms from Sept 25 — 85 dead or missing, ~1,400 road blockages, landslides on Quản Bạ, Yên Minh–Đồng Văn and Ma Pi Leng.

And it costs 7 days door-to-door with a weather buffer — more than half this trip.

Do it properly instead: 8–10 dedicated days in the first half of November, by private jeep (~$650/vehicle for 3 days), not bikes. Ninh Bình above is the lower-consequence karst landscape that scratches a similar itch.

Sapa: the rice harvest will probably be over

An earlier version of this plan sold these dates on golden terraces. Vietnamese-language sources say otherwise: the Lào Cai provincial paper reports Sa Pa aims to finish harvesting mid-September, and VnExpress's ripening calendar sequences the regions — Sa Pa first (~done Sept 15), then Mù Cang Chải, then Hoàng Su Phì (Sept 26–Oct 5). The "mid-Sept to mid-Oct golden season" repeated in English blogs is Mù Cang Chải's calendar misapplied to Sapa.

Roughly 60% odds the valley floor is cut by the time you'd arrive. Sapa still delivers trekking, villages and cool mountain air — but if golden terraces specifically are the draw, Mù Cang Chải peaks in your window and Sapa doesn't.

⚠️ Also: typhoons closed the Lào Cai→Sapa road for ~2 weeks in Oct 2025. Keep Sapa hotels refundable.

Corrections made along the way

The "$700 round trip" I quoted early on was wrong. It came from Skyscanner/momondo "from" teasers relayed before any live search — per person, any-date, often USD, no checked bag. Your XiamenAir notification is a genuinely different and real fare, and it's option 3 above.

Bus, not night train, for Sapa — $90 for two versus $180–215, arriving at a civilised hour.

Cát Cát village removed — honest reviews call it a staged set with costume rental and a brutal uphill return.

Food: Bún Chả Hương Liên (the Obama one) is not Bib Gourmand — Tuyết Bún Chả 34 (34 Hàng Than) is. For chả cá go to Thăng Long, not Lã Vọng (2–3× the price, no Michelin, poor reviews).

Verify before booking

Vietnam travel information online is unusually stale and unusually monetized. Re-check: that VN813 and VJ914 operate on your chosen dates (regional day-of-week patterns shift) · your Sapa bus drop-off point is central · Fansipan hours and price · Bát Đàn's opening times the morning you go · and whether the XiamenAir fare includes checked bags and what transit-visa rules apply in Xiamen.

Vietnam e-visa must be MULTIPLE ENTRY if you pick a Cambodia route — you leave and re-enter, and a single-entry visa strands you at the border.
