You're inside six weeks. International fares to Southeast Asia typically bottom out 2–3 months ahead and climb steadily inside 30 days — the $2,212 on the table is a good number for these dates and is more likely to rise than fall from here. Everything else on this page can wait days or weeks. This one shouldn't.

There's a ~60% chance the Mường Hoa terraces are cut by Sept 22. Sapa still delivers trekking, villages and cool mountain air — but if golden terraces specifically are what you want, the honest answer is that Mù Cang Chải peaks in your window and Sapa doesn't. Swapping is more work and rougher logistics. Decide by early September, once a local confirms.
Half a day on Sept 15 (~$25/pp). Genuinely interesting, quite claustrophobic, and it competes with a slower Chợ Lớn morning. Skippable without regret if you'd rather eat.
$65 for two, and roughly 50–60% odds of a clear summit. Don't pre-book — hold it for whichever Sapa morning wakes up clear, and take the Tả Phìn herbal bath instead if it's white.
It's the most spectacular road in Vietnam and it deserved a real argument. Three things decided it:
1. Your licence doesn't work there. Vietnam recognises only the 1968 Vienna Convention; Canada is a 1949 Geneva signatory. A CAA International Driving Permit has no legal standing in Vietnam — there's no version where you ride legally. Which means uninsured: medevac to Hanoi is €4,000–8,000, repatriation €30,000–80,000. As driver in an accident you can face criminal charges and an exit ban.
2. Two consecutive Septembers of closures. 2024: Typhoon Yagi, then a Sept 30 landslide at Km156 of NH4C closed Ma Pi Leng and stranded tourists. 2025: three storms from Sept 25 — 85 dead or missing, ~1,400 road blockages, landslides on Quản Bạ, Yên Minh–Đồng Văn and Ma Pi Leng.
3. It costs 7 of your 14 days door-to-door with a weather buffer — more than Saigon, the Mekong and Angkor combined — and the food is basic, which matters on a trip whose spine is eating.
Do it properly instead: 8–10 dedicated days in the first half of November — dry, clear, and peak buckwheat bloom across the plateau. If you ever do go, take a private jeep (~$650/vehicle for 3 days), not bikes: you stay dry, you can actually talk to each other, and a car handles a wet mountain road far better than two novices.
Admin note: Ha Giang province merged into Tuyên Quang province on 1 July 2025 — expect naming inconsistency on maps and booking sites.
The Sapa rice harvest will probably be over. An earlier version sold these dates on golden terraces. The Lào Cai provincial paper reports Sa Pa aims to finish harvesting in mid-September, and VnExpress's ripening calendar sequences the regions: Sa Pa first (~done Sept 15), then Mù Cang Chải, then Hoàng Su Phì (Sept 26–Oct 5). The "mid-Sept to mid-Oct golden season" in English blogs is Mù Cang Chải's calendar misapplied to Sapa.
Bus, not night train. The train is $180–215 for a private 2-berth versus $34–50 for a VIP-cabin bus, and arrives at 05:30 with a 6-hour wait before check-in.
The IDP point is stronger than first written. Not "needs a motorcycle endorsement" — a Canadian IDP is simply void in Vietnam.
Cát Cát village removed — honest reviews call it a staged set with costume rental and a brutal uphill return.
Food corrections: Bún Chả Hương Liên (the Obama one) is not Bib Gourmand — Tuyết Bún Chả 34 is. For chả cá go to Thăng Long, not Lã Vọng (2–3× the price, no Michelin recognition, poor reviews).
Vietnam travel information online is unusually stale and unusually monetized. Specifically re-check: VN813 and VJ914 operate on Sept 17 / Sept 20 · your Sapa bus drop-off point · Fansipan hours and price · Bát Đàn's opening times the morning you go · and the harvest state.
